Leather/Textile Sofas Maintenance

0 28

Every piece of furniture is impresses with design, but you also need to make sure they always look fresh and clean. Sofas and armchairs are often the central pieces of your living room decor, but they are also the most susceptible to accidents.

In this article we are going to discuss how to take care of your comfortable sofas. Each material has its own particularities, therefore we broke down the article into categories:

Leather Sofas

Leather sofas need to be placed so that the sun is not streaming onto them. In time, sunlight will cause discoloration. Also, it is recommended to use only specialized solutions. If, however, you are not willing to use chemicals, there is a solution. As odd and it may sound, baby soap is great for this material because it doesn’t contain soda. Unpleasant odors can also be dealt with without using chemicals. Mix one part vinegar and 3 parts water, soak a rag and rub it gently onto the surface. In the beginning, it will smell worse than it did in the first place, but in 2-3 days your couch will be odor-free.

Never use dish-wash or laundry detergents. Also, avoid at any cost alcohol-based solutions. Don’t use abrasive creams or solutions containing solvents and acids. All of these will waken the material and cause discoloration.

Textile Sofas

Textile sofas are a popular choice especially because they are easier to maintain.  The most important rule is to be consequent and never let the dust buildup or the stains dry.  For the dust, if you know you are going away for a while, cover them with a sheet (avoid plastic because it may cause condensation). For the stains, make sure you proceed to cleaning immediately after the accident. Just like we said above, there are special detergents, but you can also use some home-made solutions. For instance, you can clean them using an ammonia solution (equal parts). This solution will not only clean but also refresh the colours. For difficult stains (like red fruits), you can use sodium bicarbonate.
