I think you can agree with us that the kitchen is that one place where chaos feels at home. Firstly, because you cannot give up any of the components: furniture, cabinets, counters, fridge, cooker and all sorts of appliances. And then the little space remaining will be filled with bags, jars, cutlery, packs, cartons, dishes, pots, pans, cleaning products… shall we go on?
How can you better organize all these for a more functional (and more aesthetically pleasing) kitchen? Here are 5 ideas you might like:
Do you have a small kitchen and you find it impossible to find storage spaces? Use the vertical space. Shelves and cabinets will help you store more things in a seemingly smaller space, they offer quick and easy access and they are not standing in your way.
Don’t pile up stuff, you will create a mess and the things you need will forever be hard to get to. Instead, why not hang them? For instance, you can have a bar mounted underneath your sink, where you can hang all your cleaning solutions. The space below remains free and you can use it to store anything you like.
Do you get lost in the tremendous amount of bags and boxes? It would be a mistake to believe that all food goes in the fridge and you don’t need extra space. What about pasta and canned goods? What about coffee, tea, sugar, honey etc.? Here’s what you can do: craft some dispensers for the products you regularly use. Not only can you save space by mounting them on the wall, you will also have easy access and you will be able to see when you are running out. Some of us get really angry if we discover we’re out of coffee.
Mount racks in your cabinets for flat objects (e.g. plates). Again, it’s all about easy access. The plate you need will always be the one at the bottom of the pile.
Label everything. Draw or print some labels for each jar and box where you put something. Besides the fact that this is also a great design trick, you won’t have to smell 7 jars to discover where you put the cinnamon.
